In collaboration with many Town and redevelopment agencies, our
Civic Development Committee has designed and is working toward
our installation of a new park (“Triangle Park”) in Downtown
Hingham. This project will reach fruition upon completion of
train tunnel work, scheduled for 2007.
-
Other current Civic Development projects include the design and
installation of plantings at Hingham’s second Habitat for
Humanity house, a redesign and installation of plantings at the
Library’s Main Entrance, and the recent installation of planters
of red geraniums at the Veterans’ Memorial at Town Hall.
-
The Garden Club of Hingham maintains the sunken parterre garden
at the Old Ordinary, the Cole Terrace and embankment at the
Garden House, gardens at the Leavitt Street and Main entrances
to the Library, the courtyard of the Library, and the traffic
islands at Hingham Centre. In addition, our members spearheaded
the formation of Hingham’s Beautification Commission to
facilitate the planting and care of other parks and islands
within the town.
-
In 2006 we donated funds to the Plymouth River School for an
irrigation system to support new entrance gardens to the school.
-
In 2006, a Cornus kousa (Kousa Dogwood) was donated to the Town
of Hingham to commemorate Arbor Day and was planted at the
Library.
-
Additional 2006 donations were made to: The Hingham Land
Conservation Trust; The Trustees of Reservations; The South
Shore Natural Science Center; The Tower Hill Botanic Garden; The
National Garden Club in support of the May 2007 National
Convention in Boston; and GCFM participants in the NGC “Habitat
Walk” to benefit two Gulf Coast landscape projects. The Sophia
B. Plimpton Scholarship for Children of Members is also
available for application through the Scholarship Chairman.
-
Our Junior Gardeners Committee won a “Club of Distinction” Award
for its work with youth.
-
We received a Press book Award from the GCFM, and excellent
publicity continues to inform the public and attract new members
to our Club.
-
In 2005, we offered a $1,000 grant through the Hingham Education
Foundation to fund a program or event in the Hingham Public
Schools to advance learning in the areas of horticulture,
botany, and/or environmental awareness. The resulting project
was a study of ecology and the natural history of Hingham
environments, and approximately 350 students benefited from this
explorative study.
-
Christmas wreaths, designed and decorated by members, are
donated to various organizations and sites, including the Old
Ordinary, the Hingham Public Library, and the Community Center.
-
Flower arrangements are provided by members on a weekly basis to
the Hingham Public Library and annually to the Old Ordinary for
the Hingham Historical Society House Tour.
-
The Garden Therapy Committee plans workshops for Hingham senior
citizens at sites such as Queen Anne’s Nursing Home, Lincoln
School Apartments, Thaxter Park, and Harbor House.
-
Past initiatives include: plantings surrounding the Veterans’
Memorial at Town Hall; foundation plantings at Hingham’s first
Habitat for Humanity house; implementing a master landscaping
plan for the South Shore Country Club; funding and helping to
install the “Signature Garden” at the South Shore Country Club;
and funding and assisting in the design of the central courtyard
of the Hingham Public Library.
